John Quincy Adams' first accomplishment as the secretary of state was to negotiate a deal with Napoleon and France to give up most of the now southeast American lands. This negotiation was known as the Louisiana purchase. This major accomplishment benefitted our country by producing almost 20% of the land owned by the United States today. Also, this was a very wealthy deal because it provided America with many acres of land at the small cost of 3 cents an acre.
